Bonita Bay Pro League Recap

With only three regular season dates left on the Pro League Schedule (see end of post for remaining schedule & standings), Boston Retirement Advisors (BRA) will be hard to catch after opening up a 7.5-point lead on second-place AutoDrive (AD).

AutoDrive and Harborside Dental (HD) were tied for second going into last Friday’s matches at Bonita Bay, but a dismal performance by HD against BRA, and shrewd maneuvering by AD Captain Denny Rager against Johnny Malloy’s (JM) dropped HD into third. JM made up no ground on the field, and holds the fourth spot as it has all season.

BRA vs. HD
The league-leading team, BRA, posted the highest point total of the season (9) against our team, HD, this past Friday at Bonita Bay. It probably has been a lonnnnnng tiiiiiime since a Mike Curran-led team was dominated as we were last Friday!

Coming into the match, we were tied for second with AutoDrive, and just four points behind BRA. However, after surveying the damage, licking our wounds, and tallying the scores (9-3), we emerged from the match 10 points behind BRA, who stretched their lead with our major contribution to their point total (41).

Courts 1 & 2

At the No.1 position, Mike Curran and Sergio Rebolledo lost to undefeated Manuel Encalada and Tyler Owens 3-6, 5-7; At No.2, Jeremy Orme and I lost to Frank Fourgeau and Luke Andreae 5-7, 6-3, 1-6…and that was after we held a 5-2 lead in that first set. I feel like Roger Federer, Ugh!

Courts 3 & 4
BRA recorded four points on these two courts. Captain Jim Katterfield and Fred Hindle of BRA beat Mike Lawver and Mark Drons 6-3, 6-2 on Court 3; and Dave Dooley and Rick Calton upended Tony Halski and Fran Coryell 6-1, 6-4 on Court 4.

Mixed Doubles
HD's only winners were the very reliable team of Dan Moenning and Christie Bradley in Mixed Doubles. They pulled out yet another third-set super-tiebreak, beating Jeff Timmer and Erica Cossairt 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.

AD vs. JM
With some very creative lineup moves and solid play at First Doubles, Captain Denny Rager manufactured 5.5 points for his team against JM, moving AD into second place behind BRA, and pulling ahead of HD.

Court 1
Denny and Jared Kalpin of AD played a tight one against JM's Co-Captains Scott Harrington and Shawn Hedrick. The crowd erupted at the end of this 6-4, 7-6 thriller, but I’m sure Scott and Shawn weren’t too happy about Denny and Jared’s comeback in the tiebreak to post two points for AD.

Court 2
In Second Doubles, Jeff Diggs and Matt Maloney (sub) claimed a point for JM by beating John Jerome and Tom Fisher 6-4, 3-6, 10-3. I believe that makes a four-match win-streak for Jeff after a 0-2 start.

Court 3
Elliott DeBolt and Alex Hermeto won back-to-back tiebreaks over Jorge Magalhaes and Todd Wise at Third Doubles, notching two more points for AD, while Steve Shortridge and Anthony Hatori beat Terry See and Mark Owens in straight sets at Fourth Doubles, posting two points for JM.

Mixed Doubles
Adding one more to the AD total, Rob Vinal and Belinda Dufrene (sub) toppled John Ramsey (sub) and Kerry Kendrick 6-3, 6-3.
