USPTA Pro League: Fiddlesticks Recap & Landings Preview

Remax Captain
Frank Fourgeau
Almost half-way through the Fort Myers Ritzman Tennis USPTA Pro League, Frank Fourgeau’s (Gulf Harbour) Remax has emerged as the team to beat. Remax has been the top point earner in two of the four engagements thus far, and amassed the second most points in the other two. As a result, the team has fashioned a 4.5-point lead over its closest competitors.

BRA Captain
Scott Harrington
Boston Retirement Advisors (BRA) led by Scott Harrington locally based at Shadow Wood, and Johnny Malloy’s (JM), captained by Gulf Harbour’s Mike Curran, have both been consistent, leading to a second-place tie with 17 points. They are, however, just a half-point ahead of Jeff Diggs of Fiddlesticks’ Babolat, which started the season by posting the highest point total of any match thus far (7).

GD Captain
Shawn Hedrick
The final two teams in the mix, fifth-place Gateway Dental (GD) captained by Shawn Hedrick of The Strand, and University Grill (UG) led by Mike Lawver of Heritage Palms, have struggled with their consistency. For example, GD (15 points) has posted both the second highest (6) and the lowest (2) point totals posted for an engagement.

UG (12 points) hasn’t performed to its potential yet, but posted its highest point total (4) in the most recent event at Fiddlesticks, and could be poised for a late-season run. Here’s the lowdown on the action at Fiddlesticks last Friday:

Remax vs. Boston Retirement Advisors (BRA)
Manuel Encalada & Luke Andreae
Manuel "Manolito" Encalada and "Lethal" Luke Andreae claimed two points for Remax with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of "Slippery" Scott Harrington and Jared "J-Rock" Kalpin on Court 1. Scott and Jared played well yet again, but can’t seem to get over the hump to post a “W” on the board for BRA.

Jim Katterfield & Joel Hampton
On Court 2, League Commissioner Jim “Katman” Katterfield, the only player on the court eligible for AARP, teamed with jaunty Joel Hampton to take down the previously undefeated Frank “Frenchy” Fourgeau and Corey “The Afternoon” Knapp, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8. The big news here? I don’t think either Frank or Joel broke a racquet! Score two points for BRA and senior citizen tennis players across the globe!

Paul D'Amico & Mike Barnes
Paul “The Dynamo” D’Amico and Mike “Bring it on” Barnes did some damage for BRA on Court 3, dusting off “Dropshot” Dave Dooley and “Gorgeous” Jorge Magalhaes 6-3, 7-5.

Christie Bradley & Dan Moenning
It probably wouldn’t surprise you to hear that “Uber-cool” Christie Bradley and “Dapper” Dan Moenning squeaked out yet another super-tiebreak on the Mixed Court, right? Didn’t think so. That’s exactly what Christie and Dan did, posting two more point for Remax by downing “Krafty” Kim Jones and “Gracious” Greg Copeland 5-7, 6-3, 12-10.

Babolat vs. University Grill
Denny Rager & Tyler Owens
Tyler “Too Cool” Owens posted two points for home team Babolat on Court 1, teaming with “Deft” Denny Rager to defeat “Slinging” Sergio Rebolledo and Matt “Mayhem” Maloney 6-4, 6-3. Tyler and Denny have yet to lose playing together, making them the only undefeated Court 1 team thus far.

John Jerome & Jeff Diggs
Court 2 featured Fiddlesticks host Captain Jeff “Digger” Diggs who partnered with John “JJ” Jerome to knock of “Prince” Patrick Kangwa and Mark “Demon Grip” Drons 6-3, 6-4 for another two Babolat points. I believe that ties Digger and JJ with Frank and Corey for the lead in wins on Court 2 with three. Don’t hesitate to correct me if I’m wrong guys.

Terry See & Mike Lawver
The Lawvers put a halt to the madness, stopping Babolat’s run with wins on Courts 3 and Mixed. “Money” Mike Lawver and Terry “The Grip” See upended Toni “All Hands” Halski and John Gillette (sub) 6-3, 6-3,
Tony Martin & Carolyn Lawver
and Carolyn “Long arm of the” Lawver joined Tony “No Dean” Martin to topple Erica “All Heart” Cossairt and Armor “All” Persons 6-2, 6-2. It was UG’s best performance of the season’s campaign, allowing them to gain a point on fifth-place Gateway Dental (GD).

Johnny Malloy’s (JM) vs. Gateway Dental (GD)
Mike Curran & Elliot Debolt
Although JM and GD split the four matches JM still won the skirmish with a 4-3-edge, and held on to second place, now tied with BRA. On Court 1, Mike “Curr Dawg” Curran and Elliot “Lightning” Debolt shocked Ryan “Shonuff” Sherry and “Slick” Shawn Hedrick in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 to earn two points for JM.

T. A. & Anthony Hatori
On Court 2, Anthony “Five-0” Hatori and I took down Todd “Word to The” Wise and “Krafty” Kevin Kearns 6-3, 6-4, to pick up two points for GD. Anthony didn’t have to use his broad shoulders much this match, as it was the best match I’ve ever played at Fiddlesticks. Love those sunlit afternoon matches! Fortunately my partner still brought his big serve and smoking returns.

Oliver Stenger & Larry Gagnon
On Court 3, Oliver “The Omniscient” Stenger and Larry “The Legend” Gagnon continued to steamroll the competition, taking two points for JM in a hard-fought contest from Steve “So Smooth” Shortridge and Jeff “Anything but Timid” Timmer, 6-3, 6-4.

Chandler Kleinpeter & Alex Hermeto
For a second consecutive session, Alex “The Hombre” Hermeto posted a “W” for GD, this time teamed with Chandler "Calamity" Kleinpeter (sub). Alex and Chandler downed John “Rip It” Ramsey and Christyn “Gotta Love It” Lucas 6-4, 6-1 to earn one point for GD.

This week’s matchups at The Landings league-leading Remax goes up against league-trailing University Grill. However, coming off their best performance of the season, the “Grillers” may just pull off the upset.

Johnny Malloy’s will be seeking to break a second-place tie with Boston Retirement Advisors, and will face fourth-place Babolat. Babolat only trails JM by half a point, and posted the highest point total in a matchup this season (7), so this one should be anyone’s ballgame.

BRA gets to take on GD, a team coming off its second worst performance of the season and looking to bounce back. BRA has been as consistent as anyone, scoring more points over the past three sessions than any team except the league leader. With UG making a run, things could look very different after Friday’s matches.
