Holiday Round Robin a Hit at The Hideaway

This past Saturday, the 29th, Hideaway Tennis held its Inaugural Holiday Round Robin, an event that was a terrific blend of long-standing and new tennis members, as well as a fun event that raised funds for the Scholarship Fund of the Greater Fort Myers Continental Women’s Club.

Former Scholarship Recipients
We had to do a bit of last-minute shuffling, but when all was said and done, we had a mix of eight residents and eight non-residents participating. Everyone had a good time, and we took advantage of the holiday season to contribute to the life of at least one young woman. The event raised $170 for the Scholarship Fund.

Sandy, T.A., Bert Ann
In addition to Bert Ann Haas (a Hideaway member who participated and helped organize the event) Co-Chair of the “Gameday” fundraising committee, Sandy Gribaudo, was on hand for the event and thanked the participants for their generosity.

Linda Sisco & Rennie Bassett
To spice up the event a bit, a free ½-hour lesson was on the line for the player winning the most games. Not too deep into the proceedings, it became apparent that Linda Sisco would be just a bit too strong for anyone to catch. Linda was even able to carry me left-handed…but then so did Bill Dey.

Paula Barry & Bert Ann
Despite Linda’s dominance, Gisela Klauke, Paula Barry and Lee Cross gave her a run for her money. In the end, Linda took top honors with 25 games won. Paula and Gisela tied for second with 21 games, and Lee closed out the players in the 20s with an even 20 games.

Peg Perry & Bill Cross
We also had the same prize available for the player who finished with the lowest game-total, and Peg Perry and Bill Cross, president of The Hideaway Tennis Association, tied for the “honor.”

Lee Cross &
Olivia Trevino Schanen
We were about to initiate the tiebreak, when Bill gallantly chose his wife Lee to partner him in the breaker, and that was enough for me. Both Peg and Bill were awarded free ½-hour lessons.

Chivalry may be comatose, but it is obviously not dead! Way to go Bill!

As a form of “Thank You” for participating and donating to the worthy cause, all participants were entered in a raffle for 2 free 1-hour private lessons with me.
Bill Dey & Melnaie Jackman
The tennis gods owed Bill Dey one for carrying me while I played lefty, so he won the first drawing, and Melanie Jackman, a Gulf Harbour resident and new Hideaway member, who has been a staunch supporter of mine, won the second.

Paul Schanen & Gale Caron
In addition to a HUGE “THANK YOU“ to all of the participants, I’d like to thank Bert Ann for all of her efforts to help make this happen, Sean for donating the beverages, Terri for coming out despite not feeling well, and Ken Haas and Paul Schanen for filling in on court.

Terri Turner & Bill Dey
All in all it was a good beginning to what we hope will be a new tradition in Hideaway Tennis. It was a fitting close to 2012 and a terrific precursor to 2013. Happy New Year everyone!
