3.0 Captain Pearle Warren |
3.0 Team
After two sweeps in their last two matches, our 3.0 ladies
captained by Pearle Warren, are in 6th place, but just three points out of
third after seven weeks of play. The team has swept three of the seven matches
played, and split (won 2 of 4 matches) courts in three of the remaining four
matches.
In their most recent match on Monday, November 26, at the
Landings, our 3.0 ladies proved their mettle by winning three of the four
matches they won in third-set super-tiebreaks. In each of the three tiebreak matches,
our ladies lost the first set before coming back to win.
Karen & Marie in Action |
On Court 1, Karen Keeling and Marie Awrey took just a while to
wake up, dropping the first set 0-6 against Pat Benner and Nancy Bombard. But wake up they did, winning the second set
6-3 and the super-tiebreak 10-5.
Agi & Barb |
On Court 2, Agi Keleman and Barb Saling took a page from Karen
& Marie’s book, losing the first set 1-6 to Gretchen Howard and Donna Magurk. But like their Court 1 counterparts, they won the second set 6-4, and closed out the third-set-breaker 10-7.
Terri & Nina |
Terri Turner and Nina Carpenter had absolutely no fool around in
their game on Court 3, downing Judy Kay and Penny Quilici in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. I
suspect they wanted to watch the other matches.
Lynne |
The match of the day was on Court 4, where Gisela Klauke and
Lynne Price truly went the distance! Gisela and Lynne lost a close first set,
4-6, but showed all the grit one could want in taking the second 7-6. Gisela
and Lynne completed the sweep, edging their opponents in the third-set tiebreak 13-11 after being down 1-5. Wow, what a win!
Copper Team
Bonnie, Bert, Lee |
Taking a cue from the 3.0 ladies, our Copper team, led by Bert
Ann Haas, swept its most recent match this past Friday (Nov. 30). Back to
full strength with the return and addition of a few team members, the sweep
suggests that our Copper team will be a force to be reckoned with for the rest
of the season.
Gale Caron & Captain Bert Ann Haas observe the triumph |
In their match on Friday, the team swept Colonial, a team that
had at least split all of its previous six matches, and which still is several
positions above our Copper team's standing. Not only did our Copper ladies
sweep all four courts, they refused to donate a single set to the opposition.
Linda & Karen |
On Court 1, Karen Keeling and Linda Sisco, a Hideaway resident
and new team member, played well in their first effort together. They downed
Jane Wullschlenger and Ellen Teague 6-3, 6-4 in a match that was more
competitive than the score. In the end, Linda’s athleticism and Karen’s heady
play prevailed.
Marie & Michelle |
Also playing together for the first time, Marie Awrey and
Michelle Paguette, another new team member and Hideaway resident, were too
strong for Susan Andrade and Cheryl Mercurio, winning 6-0, 6-4. Michelle’s
aggressive play and Marie’s relentless retrieving presented an unsolvable
riddle for Colonial’s Court 2 contingent.
Bonnie & Lee |
Lee Cross, our Tennis Association Secretary and long-time
Hideaway resident, joined with Bonnie Bogli to form yet another formidable
first-time pairing on Court 3, demolishing Karen Miller and former Hideaway
Copper Team member Jean Sanders, 6-2, 6-2. Lee played at least a foot above her
5’ 1” and Bonnie dissected the opposition with deftly directed shots.
Fran & Agi |
On Court 4, Agi Keleman and Fran Negin continued to gel as a
team, dispatching Dorothy French and Sherry Murray, 6-3, 6-3. With a
complementary style composed of Agi’s power play and Fran’s deceptive guile,
Agi and Fran present a daunting dilemma for the competition.
With the already impressive results from our 3.0 team and the
Copper team now at full strength, we should expect a strong finish from our
Hideaway ladies who will surely show their metal through the remainder of the
season. As always, spectators are welcome to the matches played at 10:30am on
Mondays (3.0) and Fridays (Copper). Thanks for your stellar representation
of Hideaway Tennis ladies! Game, set, match…T. A.
