Gulf Harbour had a tremendous turnout for the second stop of the
Fort Myers Ritzman Tennis USPTA Pro League this past Friday, November 2…but
that is pretty much par for the course at Gulf Harbour, a venue that always
brings the crowds. The fans were treated to a number of very competitive
matches, with 6 of the 12 matches going to a third tiebreak-set.
Babolat vs. Gateway Dental (GD)
Steve Shortridge & Alex Hermeto of Gateway Dental |
Going into the match, league-leading Babolat (7 points) took to
the courts against Gateway Dental (2 points), which was tied for last after the
first Pro League date at Palmira. When the action concluded that night, Gateway
Dental had picked up ground on the field, earning six (6) points to Babolat’s two
and a half (2.5).
On Court 1, Captain Shawn Hedrick and Ryan Sherry of GD out-dueled
Tyler Owens and sub Dave Rowat to win 2-6, 6-4 1-0(5). At second dubs, Anthony
Hatori flexed his shoulder muscles and carried me to another super-tiebreak win
for GD. Down 1-4 in the first set, we came back to win 7-6, 3-6, 1-0(8).
Kerry Kendrick & Jeff Timmer of Gateway Dental |
On Court 3, Tony Halski of Babolat and
super-sub Tom Fisher downed Alex Hermeto and Steve Shortridge 6-4, 7-6. Our
mixed team of Jeff Timmer and Kerry Kendrick posted a 7-5, 6-3-win over Armor
Persons and Erica Cossairt
Johnny Malloy’s (JM) vs. Remax
Luke Andreae, Elliot DeBolt & Mike Curran |
Johnny Malloy’s and Remax were tied for second coming into the
match with five (5) points apiece, and the teams split the four matches.
However, Remax managed to earn points in each match to take five and a half
points (5.5) to JM’s three and a half (3.5).
Frank Fourgeau & Corey Knapp of Remax |
On Court 1 for Remax, Manny Encalada returned to his winning ways
with Luke Andreae, downing Mike Curran and Elliot DeBolt, 6-1, 6-2. Remax
Captain Frank Fourgeau and Corey Knapp posted their second consecutive “W,”
edging Todd Wise and Kevin Kearns, 6-2, 4-6, 1(8).
Larry Gagnon & Oliver Stenger |
Johnny Malloy teams took the other two matches, with Larry Gagnon
and Oliver Stenger slipping past Dave Dooley and sub Mike Stevens 6-3, 6-7, 1(4);
John Ramsey & Sandy Miller |
and John Ramsey and Sandy Miller came out ahead of Dan Moenning and Christie
Bradley in their 5-7,
6-4, 1(7) thriller. It was John and Sandy’s second consecutive win over stiff
competition.
Boston
Retirement Advisors (BRA) vs. University Grill (UG)
Paul D'Amico & Bob Green |
Unlike the other two team competitions with multiple
super-tiebreak finishes, the only barn-burner in this match-up came on Court 3,
with Mike D’Amico and Bob Green downing Terry See and Tony Martin, 7-6, 4-6,
1-0 to earn a point for BRA.
Sergio Rebolledo |
On Court 1, Sergio Rebolledo and Matt Maloney laced them up for UG
and took down Jared Kalpin and Scott Harrington 6-3, 6-4 to score two points.
At Second Doubles, Joel Hampton and Mike Barnes notched the win over Patrick
Kangwa and John Gillette (sub) to earn another two for BRA. On the mixed
doubles court, League Commissioner Jim Katterfield and Christie Pollen (sub)
defeated Mike and Carolyn Lawver, 6-2, 6-2.
Sergio Rebolledo & Matt Maloney |
Things tightened up quite a bit in the standings after this second
outing. Remax took the lead from Babolat by one (1) point, and the two play tomorrow
(Friday, Nov. 16). BRA moved up from fourth, into a tie for third with JM, two
(2) points behind the leader, and they play tomorrow. Tied for fifth with UG after
the first engagement, GD now sits in fifth alone, two and a half (2.5) points
behind the leader. UG trails the pack, three (3) points behind its nearest
competitor. GD and UG play tomorrow. See tomorrow’s team and court match-ups
below. Game, set, match...T. A.
