Grand Prix at The Landings Begins Tomorrow (Friday)

I’ve heard it said that quality is more important than quantity, and this weekend’s Grand Prix at The Landings Yacht, Golf &Tennis Club is definitely more quality than quantity. The draws are small, but there are some top level players sprinkled throughout the various draws.

In the Men’s Open Division, three of the top four players in the Grand Prix Open Division Rankings are among the 11 players in the draw. Tye Myers of Naples is the top seed, despite being ranked No.3 in the rankings, and Eric Turnquist of Winter Haven, the top-ranked player in the Open Division is seeded No.2. Franco Mata of Naples, a former USPTA National Clay Court Open Champion, and Tyler Owens of Fort Myers, are seeded third and fourth respectively. All of the above take to the courts at 5:30pm Friday (tomorrow).

The Men’s 35 Division fielded a draw of seven players, but among those are division leader Milos Vasovic of Melbourne and Kam Kuchta of Boynton Beach, who is second in the standings. There are a few local players worthy of coming out to see in this division, including Denny Rager of Fort Myers, Director of Tennis at Lely and Dave Rowat who teaches at Cape Coral Racquet Club. Pro League favorite from Punta Gorda, Luke Andreae will also battle in this division. All but the top seed will play at 5pm tomorrow.

One of the more distinguished players in the event, Horacio Rearte of Delray Beach, is the top seed in the Men’s 45s. Rearte is the rankings-leader in his division, has won multiple National Clay Court Championships, and is definitely the player to beat in this draw. If the rankings are any indication, and Rearte is to be challenged, it is likely to come from No.2 Seed Jack Steyn, fourth in the rankings or Johann Saurbier who is ranked 6th. Local MAD Academy director, Mark Davis may just be the surprise in the draw. Fort Myers pro-leaguer, John Jerome of Wildcat Run will also be contesting this division. The action begins at tomorrow at 3pm in the 45s.

The headliner and top seed in the small (five players) Men’s 50 draw is Jeff Davis of Treasure Island. Jeff is a former USTA Florida Player of the Year, USPTA Player of the Year, and USTA Florida Men’s 50s No.1. In addition, Jeff has been ranked in the top ten of both the USTA and ITF Singles Rankings. I’m seeded second, and hope to make it to a finals matchup with Jeff. We will both have to get past an opponent to reach such a showdown. Armor Persons of Fort Myers, and Breckenridge Country Club will take on Keith Soifer of Coconut Creek in his first match at 3pm tomorrow, and I will face the winner at 10am on Saturday. Jeff’s first match will also be Saturday at 10am.

The Men’s 60s feature the top-ranked player in standings, No.1 Seed Gewan Maharaj of Tampa, and second-seeded Fred Drilling of Estero, a perennial USA team member for international competition. Although Maharaj has dominated the Grand Prix 60s and Drilling now competes primarily in USTA 70s, Drilling has won National Championships on grass, and clay, and has been ranked No.1 in the ITF World Rankings. If these two hold their seeding, the final ought to be a doozy. Local players in the 60s draw include Terry See of Cypress Lake, Steve Shortridge of Colonial, Bob Green of Pelican Preserve, and Charles Van Middlesworth of Gateway. The locals are all scheduled for play at 3pm tomorrow.

As for the ladies, two locals, Carly Carpenter of Fort Myers Racquet Club and Chandler Kleinpeter of The Forest will play the only match in the Women’s Open Division on Sunday at 11am. The Women’s 45s has a slightly more substantial draw with five women vying for the title. Carolyn Franca of Tampa, the fourth-ranked player in the Grand Prix 45 rankings, is seeded No.1, and Erica Cossairt of Cape Coral Racquet Club is the two-seed.

Christie Bradley of The Santuary on Sanibel is unseeded, but you shouldn’t be surprised to see her in the final. If Christie gets past her first opponent tomorrow at 3pm, she will take on the top seed on Saturday at noon. Erica’s first match will be on Saturday at noon as well.

Well that’s the lineup for the opening matches. Doubles will begin on Saturday. Drop by the Landings tomorrow and check out your local pros in action, as well as some heavy hitters from around the State. Game, set, match…T. A.

FGCU Tennis Eagles Fly in Fort Myers Community

Coach C.J. Weber welcomes fans

In this day and age, I really appreciate people who put their money and or time where their mouths are, and C.J. Weber, FGCU Men’s Tennis Coach, and his players are certainly doing that.

Standing room only crowd at Grandezza
Earlier this year, C.J. told me that he wanted the team to be more involved in the community and vice versa, and he was willing to do what it took to make that happen. I gotta tell ya, that the man and his troops are walking the talk!

Justin's Place clients at FGCU
On Friday October 5, the Eagles hosted a clinic for with over 20 participants enrolled in Justin’s Place, “a faith-based nine-month program incorporating the 12 Steps and their biblical comparisons (using Celebrate Recovery core curriculum that helps clients overcome their hurts, habits, and hang-ups).” Justin's Place Recovery Program is just one of the programs offered and administered by St. Matthews House, a faith-based charitable organization serving Naples, Immokalee and Bonita Springs.

Lanny Kalpin welcomes
C.J. Weber & Eagles
Yesterday, the Eagles took their community consciousness to The Club at Grandezza, a Stock Development community just down the street from the FGCU campus. There, the team held practice and displayed their prowess in singles and doubles exhibitions for the standing-room-only crowd that gathered at the invitation of tennis director, Lanny Kalpin.

Zach Blythe hits some
From the number of questions about the team that I tried to field from the crowd, along with the comments I heard, the team’s effort was greatly appreciated. Perhaps the most appreciative members of the crowd were Zach Blythe and his parents, Larry and Tina. Asked about their experience, Larry responded, “We did enjoy yesterday, immensely, and are excited about becoming a traveling fan club for the FGCU Tennis team.”

Zach & Mike Beiler
A great part of their enjoyment was generated by Michael Beiler, a sophomore Eagle who, upon request, agreed to hit for a few minutes with Zach. Asked about his contribution, Beiler, answered, “I wish I would have had the opportunity Zach did yesterday when I was his age.” And as for making Zach’s day, Beiler responded, “I enjoyed it.”

It was an opportunity that Zach certainly appreciated. The young tennis fanatic had the following to say about his experience: “It was a great experience for me to hit with someone of his caliber—he really smacks the ball! Being on the court helped me realize that this is something that I definitely would like to do.”

News-Press Publisher Mei Mei Chan and
Husband Randy Kirk in the crowd
Working with rehab clients, inspiring teenagers…I think that’s walking the talk. The Eagles did that on tennis court at the Fall Invitational, and they are doing it in their community. That’s the kind of walk I can get fully behind. How about you? If supporting the Eagles in their on and off-court endeavors is something you are interested in doing, there’s a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 14 at Alico Arena at 5pm, and you can be a part of something special that’s blossoming in Southwest Florida. Drop me an email if the notion tickles your fancy. Go Eagles! Game, set, match…T. A.

Ladies of Cypress Lake & LCWTL Support Watlingtons

The late Jesse Watlington
Realists believe that we are not in control of our destinies, and all it takes is an unexpected, unplanned stroke of fortune or tragedy to remind us. Most recently the Fort Myers community experienced the tragic death of Jesse Watlington, the 11-year-old boy who was struck by lightning while at football practice at Southwest Florida Christian Academy, on Oct.3, and died on Oct. 7. The outpouring of support has been as we would expect from the Fort Myers community, and the tennis community is certainly doing its part.

4.0 Ladies of Cypress Lake
Thanks to Tracy DiBiase, I found out that the 4.0 team at Cypress Lake Country Club, in honor of Jesse and his favorite color, wore purple for their first match against Gulf Harbour. In bringing it to my attention, Tracy wrote, “Andrea Trank the President of the 4.0 division got word of it and asked the whole division to wear purple in support.  The response we got from every team was overwhelming; they all participated and wore purple or purple ribbons.”

In a sentiment that I am sure is shared by many, Tracy also wrote, “Although we didn’t know Jesse, this tragic event affected many of the girls on our team as we are parents and the thought of losing a child is unbearable.” There is little that we can do to fully express what we may feel in situations like these, but a “Jesse Fund” has been established, and the Cypress Lake 4.0 will be making a donation. Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund in support of the Watlington family can forward a contribution to McGregor Baptist Church 3750 Colonial Blvd, Fort Myers, FL 33966 and include “Jesse’s Fund” in the “For” line, or call the church office at (239) 936-1754.

My condolences go out to the Watlington family, and kudos to the ladies of the LCWTL and to the members of the Fort Myers community who have rallied behind the family.

Hideaway Tennis Begins New Era

Hideaway's Sean Balliet & Jerry Courtney
welcome Andrea Trank & Cindy Cheslosky
The Hideaway management’s (Tom Dudas, & Sean Balliet) initiative to develop the Club’s tennis program, as a means of enhancing The Hideaway’s profile and presence in the Greater Fort Myers area is off to a terrific start. Since the effort began in April, tennis membership has increased by more than 70%, and two Hideaway teams have begun play in the Lee County Women’s Tennis League (LCWTL).

Karen Keeling & Terri Turner
(in red & Black)
congratulate Linda Reidl & Liz Byck
The Hideaway’s 50-Plus Copper team opened play at home this past Friday against Gulf Harbour and our ladies gave a good account of themselves, winning two of the four matches played. On Court #1, Karen Keeling and Terri Turner ran into the tough team of Liz Byck and Linda Reidl, and fell in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Agi Keleman & Fran Negin
On Court #2, Hideaway’s Agi Keleman and Fran Negin cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lois Piano and Vicki Terry. The combination of Agi’s power and Fran’s placement proved too much for the Gulf Harbour ladies to overcome.

Nina Carpenter & Barb Saling
The match on Court #3, proved to be the match of the day, going deep into the third-set super-tiebreak. Nina Carpenter and Barb Saling edged Donna Profit and Mickie Sonin 7-6 in the first set, but the Gulf Harbour players were resilient, and climbed back into the match, taking the second set 6-2. Nina and Barb fell behind early in the super-tiebreak, and trailed 8-3. It appeared that the match was all but over, but our Hideaway ladies fought back, tying things up at 8-8, before losing the final two points of the tiebreak and the match.

Lynne Price & Bert Ann Haas
Captain Bert Ann Haas and Lynne Price, one of The Hideaway’s 3.0 team players, took a tough 7-5 first set from Diane Russ and Luann Powers, then ran away with the second set 6-0. According to Bert Ann, the match was tougher than the score indicates, and claimed that if it had been any tougher, her replacement hip might not have been able to handle it. I suspect that hip would have handled it just fine.

Add caption
After the team match, the ladies from Gulf Harbour joined our team members on the patio for lunch. The entire affair was precisely what the LCWTL is all about: good, fun competition and camaraderie.

Sean Balliet shares pre-season
lunch with teams
It was a terrific opening to the season, and the new era of Hideaway Tennis! Our 3.0 team, led by Pearle Warren, will take on Cape Coral Yacht Club tomorrow (Monday, Oct. 15) at 10:30am at home. We look forward to seeing you out there!

October Tennis in Fort Myers

FGCU Eagles at Grandezza Tomorrow
FGCU Hosts St. Matthews
October is definitely a busy tennis month in Fort Myers generally, and it certainly is for the FGCU Men’s Tennis Eagles this year. The FGCU Men’s Tennis Team isn’t resting on its laurels after winning the Fall Invitational two weeks ago. The following weekend (last Friday, View photos), the Eagles hosted a clinic at FGCU for members of a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program at St Matthew’s House. Tomorrow, the team will be running practice and playing exhibitions at The Club at Grandezza. If you want to see and meet the top collegiate players in our area, hop on down to Grandezza. Activities run from 11am – 1:30pm. I’ll be there.

LCCTA in Action
Ian Ziegler- Boys' 14 Champion
Last weekend (6th & 7th) the Lee County Community Tennis Association (LCCTA) held the Fall Festival, a junior tourney at the Barbara Manzo Tennis Center at Three Oaks Park, which drew about as many players are we are likely to have at the USPTA Grand Prix event coming up next week at The Landings. It was a rare treat for me to watch some really talented little and not so little ones play the game the way it was meant to be played (click here for full story and pics).

The Landings Hosts one for Charity
Pink & Blue Participants
While the juniors were at Three Oaks, the adults were at The Landings.  Paul D’Amico and his staff hosted the inaugural Pink & Blue Mixed Doubles benefit tourney this past weekend. Twenty-two teams  played in the event, which was held in support of the National Cancer Survivor’s Day, with the proceeds benefitting the Regional Cancer Center of Lee Memorial Health System.

Dave & Barb Peirson
Teams competed in two divisions, 50 & over and 60 & over. I’m willing to bet that anyone who played last weekend had enough tennis for the week! Well, perhaps not, knowing some of those tennis junkies. In any event, Dave and Barbara Peirson defeated Gloria Killen and Leon Clark of the Cape Coral Yacht Club to claim the 60 & over division,

David Dekeersmaker & Maggie Reblan
and Maggie Reblan and David Dekeersmaker, of Miromar Lakes, defeated Judy Wilson and Ed Bonkowski of Gulf Harbour to take the 50 & over division.

USPTA Grand Prix Next Week
Paul D’Amico and his staff apparently don’t know what it means to rest on one’s laurels. Just two weeks after hosting the Inaugural Pink & Blue, The Landings will host the first USPTA Grand Prix event in the area in more than six years. USPTA Tennis Professionals will take to the courts for ranking points and cash. There will be fireworks in the Open Division, as some of the big hitters from Naples and elsewhere will be coming to town. The hitting won’t be as big, but it will be every bit as competitive in the other singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.

Steve Shortridge
Some of your favorite pro league players, along with some area newcomers, will be putting their games to the test against all comers. Participants include Steve Shortridge of Colonial, Jim Katterfield of Shadow Wood, Carolyn Lawver of Heritage Palms, Kerry Kendrick of Casa Ybel, Bob Green of Pelican Preserve, Jeff Diggs of Fiddlesticks, Alex Hermeto of Gateway, Anthony Hatori of Pelican Sound, John Jerome of Wildcat Run, Luke Andreae of Punta Gorda Club Chandler Kleinpeter of The Forest, and of course, yours truly. Draws should be posted by Thursday of next week (18th), so if you’re interested in seeing what’s going on, just click here.

Pro League in Two Weeks
Steve Shreiner
USPTA Florida Fast Dry Courts and 10S Tennis Supply Grand Prix should be the perfect appetite whetting for those of you who enjoy the Fort Myers USPTA Pro League. But lemme tell you how strong the Fort Myers pro league is this year. USTA National Champion Steve Shreiner couldn’t even get a spot in somebody’s lineup this season! Well, to be honest, it’s just that we have so many talented full-time professionals in the area, that although Steve would be a great addition on one of the teams, he’s only here part time. Sorry Steve. Hope we get to play together at least once.

That aside, our USPTA Pro League is about to get underway. The action begins at Palmira Golf & Country Club in Bonita Springs on Friday, October 26, and culminates at Colonial Country Club with the playoffs on March 22. There’s a new format this season, with six teams, instead of four, vying for Pro League honors. Team competition will include three men’s doubles and one mixed doubles match. Click here for Team Rosters and Match Schedule.

Manuel Ecalada & Tyler Owens
In the first skirmish, Team Babolat led by Jeff Diggs will take the stage against Scott Harrington’s Boston Retirement Advisors; Johnny Malloy’s, captained by Mike Curran, will face Mike Lawver-led University Grill; and Shawn Hedrick’s Gateway Dental Suites will take on Frank Fourgeau’s Remax. Fortunately for the rest of the competition on Court 1, last season’s undefeated team of Manuel Encalada and Tyler Owens will no longer be playing together. The two will face each other at Pelican Landings in the third session of the season.

Pro League Newcomers
Newcomers to Pro League include Chandler Kleinpeter of The Forest, playing with John Ramsey of Kelly Greens; Kim Jones of The Landings, teamed with Bob Green of Pelican Preserve; Paul D’Amico and Mike Barnes of The Landings, who will play together; Ryan Sherry of Cypress Lakes, who will play with Shawn Hedrick of The Strand; and Matt Maloney of Punta Gorda Club, who will play with Sergio Rebolledo of Gulf Harbour. It should be another exciting Pro League season, so to be out every other Friday. It’s just the thing to do if you’re a tennis fan!

Musical Pros
Fred Hindle & Julia Curran
Speaking of pros, if this were musical chairs, we’d have to use a stadium with all the tennis pros moving around. I couldn’t possibly detail them all, but here are a few you might be interested in hearing about. My ex-doubles partner and former colleague at Gulf Harbour, Joel Hampton, has taken a position as Director of Tennis at the Quarry in Naples. Yes, little brother is moving on up in the world.

Joel & T. A.
Crowd-pleasing Jared Kalpin, formerly of Bonita Bay, Grandezza, and The Landings, is now on staff with Pavel & Blackwood on Sanibel Island. I believe Jared is hanging at The Dunes primarily. Fortunately for our tennis community, both Joel and Jared are close by, but the community is suffering a major loss with the departure of Fred Hindle, now former Director of Tennis at the Barbara Manzo Tennis Center at Three Oaks Park!

Fred Hindle
I know he’s saddened to leave the good work he was doing with kids and adults at Three Oaks, but Fred couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a tennis professional position at Valdosta Country Club in Valdosta, Georgia. Many of us, particularly his students at Three Oaks will miss Fred.

LCWTL Serves up Tons of Tennis
Nina Carpentar & Barb Saling of Hideaway
There's another really popular league in town that got underway this week. The Lee County Women's Tennis League, with over 200 teams and more than 1700 ladies playing in 14 divisions, launched its 2013 Season and its new Copper Division today. I'm happy to announce that The Hideaway Country Club entered a new phase of its tennis program development by putting its first LCWTL team in action today against Gulf Harbour in the inaugural season of the Copper Division. More on that in another post, but kudos to the ladies that got The Hideaway off to a terrific start in the LCWTL.

2013 US Open: You Can Be There!
US Open Box Seats
Changing gears, let’s say your two favorite players are in the final of the US Open next year, and you have the opportunity to be in the USTA President’s Box to watch it. Would you pay $20 for that opportunity? Oh, wait a minute, I forgot to mention that in addition to those box seats for the men’s or women’s final, you would also get round trip tickets to New York City (NYC), and two nights in an NYC hotel! Now, would you pay $20 for that opportunity? Oops! Forgot to mention, that you would also be transported to the USTA Billy Jean Tennis Center, receive lunch in the President’s Dining Room, have access to hospitality in the President’s Suite and access to court-side seating in Louis Armstrong Stadium, the Grandstand and all other courts.

That’s just the first prize. Second prize will get you two court-side box seat tickets in Ashe Stadium, and third will put two box seat tickets to the men’s or women’s Sony Ericsson final in your wallet. Now, Steph and I have already bought two, and I have eight remaining. Only 500 raffle tickets were printed for this fundraiser, so your chances are wayyyyy better than playing the lottery. Drop me an email or give me a call if you would like a chance at sitting in the President’s box at the 2013 US Open final.

One last thing: Funds raised from the raffle will benefit the Florida Section Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that provides grants for “youth tennis programs, adaptive tennis programs for those with special needs, community tennis programs in economically challenged areas, along with facility assistance in the renovation, refurbishment and building of quality public tennis facilities.” Bottom line? Win or lose, you are supporting a worthy cause.

USTA Officials Want You!
USTA FL Officials
Jim Dostie & Referee Ellie Madigan
It ain’t Uncle Sam, but if you can be considered a tennis enthusiast, you like being around junior tennis, and would like to make a few pesos while keeping the peace on the court, USTA FL is in need of officials. If you would like to know why you should become an official, I’ll tell you in the words of Pam Scudder, someone who has done it for years:  “It’s rewarding to see the kids grow from young players learning the game into developed and competent tournament players.”  And of course, you do get that stipend for watching tennis. Got a little time? Drop Joe Torres, Chairperson of District 7 officials, an email at  jtmonieplayer@hotmail.com or call 239-825-3714.

Happenings at Fort Myers Racquet Club
This in from Carly and Mark at FMRC: They are having a HALLOWEEN TENNIS SOCIAL!  The boo-bash will be held on Sunday, October 28 from 9:00am-12:00pm. The cost is $10 per person, but you get $2 off for wearing orange.  Everyone is invited (you do not have to be a member), but please sign up ahead of time so Carly and company are sure to get enough food & drinks for everyone. This will be a round robin format, all ability levels are welcome!  The normal Sunday mixed round robin will not be taking place on that day.

Beachview Champagne Sips
Just across the bridge on Sanibel, Toni Halski and Beachview Tennis Club will host the Inaugural Beachview Champagne Sips Tennis Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28. The tournament features mixed doubles for all levels and is sponsored by Lily Co. Jewelry Gallery. In addition to tennis, a party will be hosted at the Beachview Bistro, Sat. Oct 27 at 6:00pm, featuring a raffle for fabulous prizes with all the proceeds to benefit F.I.S.H. (Friends in Service Here).

All entrants will receive free gifts from Lily Co. and a hand towel from the Beachview Tennis Club. Along with the gifts, complimentary lunches, snacks, beverages and, of course, champagne will be provided courtside.  Entry fee is $40 per person, plus one canned good for F.I.S.H.  Deadline to register is Wed. October 24 at 5:00pm.  For more information please call the Beachview Tennis Club at 239-472-9099.

Well, that's about all i have for now, and that plenty enough; don't you think? I hope to see you at Grandezza tomorrow and at The Landings next weekend. Game, set, match...T. A.

Fort Myers USPTA Pro League Schedule, Standings & Rosters

There were 10 regular season events in the Fort Myers Ritzman Tennis USPTA Pro League this season, and Frank Fourgeau's Remax led the League from the second match through the ninth, at which point it lost the lead to Scott Harrington's Boston Retirement Advisors. Remax's fall from first only lasted one session, because they retook the lead and captured the regular season title in the last event before the playoffs at Legends on March 8. The playoffs will be held at Colonial Country Club on Friday March 22 at 4pm. Stay tuned for recap of Legends and preview of Colonial.
